Before the Beginning
Two Masters
The Message One God Alone
Appetites
Outsider
Child of the Sun (Mal. 4:2)
calling stars by name (Ps. 147:4)
“when as yet there were none” (Ps. 139:16)
Before planets were spun (Ps. 136:5-6)
galaxies hung (Job 26:7)
out-stretched like strung (Jer. 51:15/Job 9:8)
from the words of His tongue (Ps. 33:6)
Before the Ancients were young
Before David had sung
the first verse of Psalm 1
Before Jesus had come (Matt. 18:11)
for the deaf and the dumb (Mark 9:25)
the lost and the lame (Matt. 11:5)
Before Pentecost’s flame (Acts 2:1-3)
Before man was to blame (Ps. 4:2)
for turning glory to shame (Ps. 4:2)
Before “the beginning” (Gen. 1:1)
was the name
“above every name” (Phil. 2:9)
Before “Precept upon (Is. 28:13)
precept”
and “Line upon (Is. 28:13)
line”
Before the law that we kept (Ps. 119:55-56)
was given as a sign (Ex. 31:17-18)
Before the transformation (Rom. 12:2)
by renewal of the mind (Rom. 12:2)
That’s when the Lamb was slain (Rev. 5:12)
from foundations before time (Rev. 13:8)
When only darkness (Gen. 1:1-2)
was around
to see the light of life shine (John 1:4-5)
So “come let us adore Him”
let us come before Him (Ps. 95:2)
to worship and implore Him (John 4:23)
to search out and explore Him (Jer. 29:13)
‘Cause it’s in Him and for Him (Col. 1:16-17)
and by Him and to Him (Col.1:16/Rom. 11:36)
and with Him and through Him (1 Cor. 8:6)
that all “was made that was made” (John 1:3)
Depths laid, stars arrayed, (Prov. 8:23-24/Gen. 1:16)
mankind saved (John 3:17)
and I’m not afraid (Rom. 1:16)
of Eternal Light (Ps. 119:105)
which cannot fade (Is. 40:8)
and the Psalmists’ song forever played (Ps. 105:2-4)
in Heaven’s heights before time was raised
in seven days (Gen. 2:2)
in the span of an age (Ps. 90:4)
in the length of one page
‘Cause before there was Wisdom
God was a Sage;
Before there were actors, God set the stage
And before praise was made (Gen. 29:35)
there was the name above all names (Phil. 2:9)
to reign above all planes
wash out all stains
break through all chains (Acts 12:7/Nah. 1:13)
heal all our pains “by His stripes” – (Is. 53:5)
prearranged
Preordained above all things (1 Pet. 1:20)
King above all kings (Rev. 19:16)
Lord above all rings
“God of gods” by all means, (Dan. 2:47)
meaning before space and time
there were still three:
The One who is
was
and always
will be (Rev. 16:5)
Two Masters2
“Life
does not consist
in the abundance of things one possesses.” (Luke 12:15)
but in the God one professes
by the mouth that confesses (Rom. 10:9)
belief the heart stresses (Rom 10:9-10)
impresses the message
that we’re blessed when we’re tested, (1 Pet. 3:14/Jam. 1:2-3)
beaten and arrested (Mark 13:9/1 Cor. 4:11-12/2 Cor. 11:24-27)
‘cause our life’s been invested (Luke 12:22/Matt. 6:25)
not in food that digested (Luke 12:23/John 6:27)
nor clothes that we’re dressed in (Luke 12:23/Matt. 6:25)
but in warfare like Dresden (2 Cor. 10:4/1 Tim. 1:18)
armed more than Charlton Heston
equipped with a lesson (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
we “press on” (Phil. 3:12)
to press in (Luke 16:16)
past flesh like a prison
‘cause in Him we’re risen (Col. 2:12/1 Cor. 15:20-22)
reflecting light like a prism
reciting Scripture in a witticism
silencing all criticism (Ps. 8:2/31:18/Is. 54:17/1 Pet. 2:15)
listen while I spit this rhythm
“confirming the Word” (Mark 16:20)
and His Great Commission. (Mark 16:15/Matt. 28:19-20)
For men we go fishin’ (Mark 1:17/Matt. 4:19)
with no funding (Luke 9:2-3/Mark 6:7-8/Matt. 10:9-10)
beyond God’s provision (Luke 22:35)
no license except God’s permission
to “fight the good fight” – (1 Tim. 6:12)
a head-on collision
with death that results (Prov. 29:18)
from our hard-hearted lack of vision (Prov. 29:18/Eph. 4:18/Is. 6:9)
Still we fight “the good fight” (1 Tim. 6:12/2 Tim. 4:7)
of spiritual precision (2 Tim. 2:15)
and just like “iron sharpens iron” (Prov. 27:17)
the Word cuts deep (Heb. 4:12/Eph. 6:17)
and creates friction (Matt. 10:34-36)
creates sparks and lights the fire’s ignition (Jer. 5:14/23:29)
The greatest story ever told
is a work of non-fiction
it’s “the message of the cross” (1 Cor. 1:18)
and includes OUR crucifixion (Gal. 2:20/6:14)
it alludes to our affliction (Deut. 26:6-7/1 Thess. 3:3-4)
our persecution and conviction (2 Tim. 3:11-12/2 Cor. 12:10)
our admonition and correction (2 Tim. 3:16)
our instruction and direction (Ps. 32:8/Prov. 6:23)
‘cause the Messenger of the cross
is our life and resurrection! (John 11:25)
Again, life does not consist (Luke 12:15)
in the temporal, material (2 Cor. 4:18/Jam. 1:9-11)
world that’s as empty as sugar crunch cereal (Is. 24:4)
But in the King above all Monarchs (Rev. 19:16/1 Tim. 6:15)
above all politics – imperial (Is. 9:6-7/Jer. 32:27)
Faith is “the evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1)
both invisible and empirical (Rom. 1:20/Col. 1:15-16)
the God we touch may be intangible (Acts 17:27)
but our faith’s more than ethereal
because “the Word” He “became flesh” (John 1:1/14)
to give us life
forever
Spiritual (John 6:63)
The Message 3
The message got messed with (Phil. 1:15-16)
so we’re here to correct it (2 Tim. 3:16)
The Son “has been perfected” (Heb. 7:28)
when our Faith (1 John 5:4)
was resurrected (1 Pet. 1:3)
Check it! And connect this…
like pieces of papyrus
from Calvary’s hill (Luke 23:33)
to Cyprus (Acts 27:4)
even Peter can’t deny this! (Luke 22:34)
Preferring Truth is not a bias,
but the lie is (Rom. 1:25)
divisive (Hos. 10:2)
Like Ananias (Acts 5:3)
we’re indecisive (1 Kin. 18:21/Joel 3:14)
in a crisis;
not the wisest (1 Cor. 1:25/3:19-20)
when we analyze it
Y’all are too quiet
Maybe thinking “I don’t buy it!”
But if it’s free, (Is. 52:3)
then it’s not for sale (Acts 8:20)
Nineveh is waiting (Jonah 3:2)
and we’re still in the whale (Jonah 1:17)
Free manna’s getting stale (Ex. 16:35)
while we’re praying crops won’t fail?
Some are worshipping Baal (1 Kin. 22:53)
or still searching for the holy grail
But the blessing we’re lacking (James 4:2)
is ours for the asking; (James 4:2/Luke 11:9)
the mysteries of heaven- (Mark 4:11/Matt. 13:11)
ours for the unmasking
by our King Everlasting; (Jer. 10:10)
just one last thing
which gives me peace surpassing (Phil. 4:7)
all understanding, (Phil. 4:7)
and “the thoughts (Ps. 94:11)
and intents” (Heb. 4:12)
of frail human planning (Ps. 33:10)
My hope is in Your Word (Ps. 119:81/147)
fools continue panning (Ps. 14:1)
and dictators continue banning
His word’s a fire in my bones (Jer. 20:9)
God’s breath’s always fanning (Gen. 2:7)
in “the shadow of Your wings” (Ps. 17:8/36:7)
which are universe-spanning (Is. 40:12/48:13)
The Righteous Sun’s so close (Mal. 4:2)
it feels like I’m tanning
in the Light of Life (John 1:4)
on the Way through the Truth, (John 14:6)
with Melchizedek, (Ps. 110:4)
Elimelech, (Ruth 1:3)
Naomi and Ruth (Ruth 2:22)
The Church joined to Israel (1 Cor. 12:13)
in a marriage we know as (Rev. 19:7/21:9-12)
grafting in by grace (Rom. 11:17/19)
like with Jesus or with Boaz (Ruth 4:9-10)
Redeemed from the outside (Eph. 2:12-13)
the path becomes clear (Ps. 119:105)
so “we walk by faith” (2 Cor. 5:7)
without “a spirit of fear” (2 Tim. 1:7)
Fearing only God (1 Sam. 12:24)
and casting not the first stone (John 8:7)
All are judged… (Rom. 14:10)
but we’re judged alone (Rev. 20:13)
I reap what I’ve sown, (Gal. 6:7-8)
glean what I’ve grown,
cry out and groan (Rom. 8:15/2 Cor. 5:2)
to know as I am known (1 Cor. 13:12)
“before the judgment seat” (2 Cor. 5:10)
and at the right hand of the throne (Mark 16:19)
by an “invisible God” (Col. 1:15)
whose image is shown (Col. 1:15)
in that still, gentle voice (1 Kin. 19:11-12)
like the wind’s soft tone (Acts 2:2)
through my innermost man
that will someday go home
To “My Father’s house” – (John 14:2)
a place of “many mansions” (John 14:2)
seen in the Spirit like a window we glance in
at Cherubim and Seraphim (Ps. 80:1/Is. 6:2)
there with Him who can’t sin (1 John 3:9/5)
Where Lazarus is risen (John 12:17)
and David’s still dancin’! (2 Sam. 6:14)
Where Methuselah is young again (Gen. 5:27)
and blessed like Job; (Job 42:12)
Where Joseph still wears (Gen. 37:23)
his many-colored robe. (Gen. 37:23)
With one Spirit, (1 Cor.12:13/Eph.4:4)
Faith, and Hope, (Eph. 4:4-5)
for all we’re called to do (Mic. 6:8)
One Lord, (Eph. 4:5/1Cor. 8:6)
one God and Father, (Eph. 4:6/Mal. 2:10)
for Gentile and for Jew (Rom. 10:12)
One body and one baptism (Eph. 4:4-5)
united from the two (Eph. 2:14-16)
and the “King from of old” (Ps. 74:12)
in Jerusalem – New (Rev. 21:2)
Who
is this Hebrew I refer to?
I thought you knew (John 3:10)
Just connect the pieces:
we’re enslaved (John 8:34/Rom. 6:16)
so who can free us? (Gal. 5:1/John 8:32)
Not you, only Jesus
When we’re oppressed (Ps. 146:7)
and killed (Ps. 44:22)
who will see us? (Is. 29:15/Job 11:11)
Not anyone, but Jesus
Humbled to the form of man, (Phil. 2:8)
who lowered Himself to be us? (Phil. 2:6-8)
Not an idol or an angel
it was God, in the flesh, (John 1:14/1 Tim. 3:16)
as Jesus
One God Alone4
“They became fools” (Rom. 1:22)
“professing to be wise;” (Rom. 1:22)
and “exchanged the Truth of God” (Rom. 1:25)
for vain lies (Rom. 1:25)
Worshipping the creature (Rom. 1:25)
“rather than the Creator” (Rom. 1:25)
Their “god is their belly” (Phil. 3:19)
and wrath is their nature (Eph. 2:3)
In danger from anger (Matt. 5:22)
with favor they cater
to money and malice (Is. 56:11/Jude 1:11-12)
serving lust like a waiter (Titus 3:3)
Sinning willfully now, (Heb. 10:26)
they choose an end that’s worse (2 Pet. 2:20)
later (2 Pet. 2:20)
‘Cause “there is no God” (Ps. 14:1/53:1)
in the heart of a fool, (Ps. 14:1/53:1)
whose hatred and (Ps. 25:19)
tender mercies are cruel, (Prov. 12:10)
who fights for the flesh
when the flesh and soul duel (1 Pet. 2:11/Gal. 5:17)
and conforms to this world (Rom. 12:2)
with no mind of renewal. (Rom. 12:2)
With no soul of redemption, (Ps. 49:8)
no place found for repentance, (Heb. 12:17)
they run quick to the crime (Prov. 1:16/6:18/Is. 59:7)
but cannot turn from its sentence (Deut. 17:11)
like they turn from God’s tenets (2 Pet. 2:21)
to strange doctrines of men (Heb. 13:9/Mark 7:7)
like a dog returns to his vomit (Prov. 26:11)
…again! (2 Pet. 2:22)
Self-righteous false wisdom (Jer. 8:8/Job 21:34)
at work by the pen, (Jer. 8:8)
like when
“I and My Father are one” (John 10:30)
becomes Zen!?
There is one God alone (Mark 12:32/Ps. 86:10)
and His name isn’t Allah (Hos. 2:17)
There’s one Spirit, one faith, (Eph. 4:4-5)
and it’s not the Kabala (Titus 1:14)
One Way, Truth, and Life, (John 14:6)
and it’s not in Valhalla
not the Dalai or Lama (2 Pet. 2:1)
not reaching Nirvana
not Vishnu or Brahma (Lev. 19:4/26:1)
to west of Guatemala (Is. 43:5/Zech. 8:7/Matt. 8:11)
There is one God alone (Rom. 3:30/2 Kin. 19:15/19)
one King and one throne, (Rev. 4:2/Is. 16:5)
one stumbling stone (Is. 8:14/Rom. 9:33/1 Pet. 2:8)
from Gog to Magog, (Rev. 20:8)
One Lord people laud (Ps. 117:1/Rom. 15:11)
from Prague to Pekod (Jer. 50:21)
There is one God alone (Is. 37:16/20)
there, alone, is one God (Acts 17:3)
It’s not Paul or Apollos, (1 Cor. 1:12-13/3:4-5)
only Jesus can call us (Mark 2:17/Rom. 1:6)
to His Father, who’ll draw us (John 6:44)
by His Spirit who saw us (Ps. 139:16)
covered in the womb (Ps 139:13)
“being yet unformed” (Ps. 139:16)
Our days were all fashioned (Ps. 139:16)
before we were born (Ps. 139:16)
But like a child (Is. 29:16/45:9-10/Rom. 9:20)
who denies he came from his mom (Is. 45:10)
they “turn from the truth,” (Titus 1:14)
“speaking lies” like Islam (1 Tim. 4:1-2)
(false prophets and teachers (2 Pet. 2:1)
from Belial to Buddha) (2 Cor. 6:15)
There’s just one “Lamb of God,” (John 1:29/36)
there’s just one Lion of Judah (Rev. 5:5)
Christianity’s not truth
The only truth is in Christ (John 1:17/14:6)
But all are deceived by desires enticed (Jam. 1:14)
heaping up teachers (2 Tim. 4:3)
for itching ears not sufficed (2 Tim. 4:3-4)
with the author of faith, (Heb. 12:2)
salvation, and life (Heb. 5:9/John 17:2)
There’s no name but Jesus (Acts 4:12)
that can save like He did (Acts 4:12)
There are no other gods (Ps. 86:8)
who are what He is! (Ps. 96:5/97:9)
There’s no name but Jesus
that heals like He does (Matt. 8:16-17)
There’s no other god (Is. 43:10/John 17:3)
who loves us because (1 John 3:1)
we are His children, (1 John 3:1/Mal. 2:10)
from spirit (Rom. 8:16)
to bone (Gen. 1:27/Eph. 5:30)
There alone is one God… (Is. 43:11/44:6)
There is one God. Alone. (Neh. 9:6)
Appetites5
Appetites
tied tight
to the tip
of the tides’
tempestuousness
I’ve tempered lust less
than lust’s tempted me
tossed and turned like the sea
waves and waivers
momentary flavors
savored slowly
only to disown me
have shown me
lonely
meals
And it feels…
un-full-filling
Unwilling to
satisfy and satiate
hungers on an empty plate
placed
squarely
between grains fruit
meat and dairy
barely less necessary
than drinking and eating
appetites exceeding
the need for even breathing
ocean air seething
teeming
leaving
my being
conceding
defeat
residual repeat…
all alone
bon
appetite
Outsider6
I’m an outsider –
a lone-ranger, lone rider
like a sole survivor,
save my soul Provider
(slash) Savior
He says I’m
“special” and “gifted”
like Professor Xavier
But I’m a mutant outcast
getting thrown out fast
trying to outlast
all this animosity
tossed at me
at such a velocity
it’s costin’ me
my sanity
my very humanity
which says “All is vanity”
And all in all I’m very vain
insane in the space I retain
behind my main-vein
which collapses
as synapses snap
Quick as a battle rap
I tap out, passed out
an outcast getting
cast out
Brash about rejection
introspection has my eyes open wider
looking in at this outsider
Falling slowly like a hang glider
Bitter as old apple cider
I’m a confider
saying “I’m a lover, not a fighter”
But no one hears these tears
fall alone in the forest
Forced to face my tears
without friendly ears
to speak to.
I used to seek you
but now I just freak you – Out
I’m an outcast getting cast out – Side
Outside them and you
and him and her
I’m all alone
outside this…outsider
